The medium sized tiger heron is so named for its brown streaked color resembling a tiger. I found out the bird resembles another favorite wild animal. When I approached to take its picture at Sirena Ranger Station in Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica, it raised its neck either in warning or alarm to over twice its normal size. I think a more fitting name would be the giraffe heron.

I’m heading to Costa Rica in November for my sons wedding & very much looking forward to the wedding of course but all the great bird watching opportunities too. I’ll have to keep an eye out for this one.
