Sukhothai ancient spires
The ancient city of Sukhothai in Thailand was once the capital of the Thai Empire and was founded in 1238. Located 430 kilometers north of Bangkok, the ancient city is a popular stop over for travelers who shuttle back and forth between Chiang Mai and Bangkok.
You can either get off the train at Phitsanulok or take a bus straight there from either Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Once you get to Sukhothai you are still about 12 miles from the ancient city, but it is easy to find transport to the ancient city as everyone in the city knows why you are there and are happy to give directions. Sǎwngthǎew, trucks with padded benches, go back and forth routinely between the old and new cities.
