Traveling Ted is a blog that takes readers along on my adventures hiking, canoeing, skiing, and international backpacking. Many blogs focus on one aspect of backpacking, but I tackle both the outdoor adventure side and international exploration as well.

Sharing is caring!

The beach is an obvious retreat from the heat

The summer of 2012 is set to be one of the hottest on records and polar bears are feeling the heat. When it is hot, adventure travel can kind of slow down. Who wants to hike while losing your body weight in water?ย  Although it is understandable to slow down, adventure travel does not have to stop all together during a heat wave.

The best aspect of these five options is they can all be done in a frugal manner.

Here are five ways to beat the heat

Beach time

Sitting on a beach is not that adventurous, but hiking through a jungle and then emerging at a beach to go swimming sure is. While I was in Trinidad & Tobago I found a two mile trail through a jungle that emerged at Macqueripe Beach.ย  After a swim it was time for the two mile hike back.

Hike to a waterfall

There is nothing quite like a refreshing dip in a waterfall. I have had this pleasure in Thailand, the Philippines, Trinidad, and here in the U.S.ย  Abrams Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains is my favorite swimming hole in the U.S., but the waterfall down from the Batad Rice Terraces had to be the most outstanding international swimming hole I have experienced.

Take a cruise

A cruise you say? There is no adventure in a cruise. Even though Leahโ€™s Travels hates them does not mean they cannot be a great way to beat the heat. Air conditioned inside and pools outside can be the way to go during this sweltering weather. A Thomson Discount Code can provide some good options for heat relief.

Canoe the Wisconsin River

The Wisconsin River from Sauk City to the confluence of the Mississippi is a 92 mile paradise. The river is completely sand bottomed and golden sandbars dot the river and invites great camping, beer drinking, and swimming. Bald Eagles seemingly fly off of every tree along the lush tree filled banks. It is a paradise for canoeists and the great swimming is a great escape from the heat.

Hike in a rainforest

Rainforests are notoriously humid, but at least they are out of the sun. Walking through a lush canopy of green spotting monkeys and birds will keep your mind off of the fact that you are dripping with perspiration. Be sure to stay hydrated and with luck you will run into a waterfall to play in. My favorite rainforest I have hiked in was Corcovado National Park in Costa Rica.

Be sure to stay cool this summer, stay hydrated, and follow these tips to stay adventurous.

Stay tuned,
