While training for the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski marathon in Hayward, Wisconsin in the Kettle Moraine State Forest southern unit, I took a few pictures with my iPhone. The Southern Unit consists of three cross-country ski trail systems: the Nordic, McMiller, and the Scuppernong. These photos came from either the Nordic system or the Scuppernong.
I have always liked the quality of the iPhone camera, but sometimes it is difficult to set the lighting. It seems the pictures are either too dark or too light and you cannot get the perfect balance. Thanks to an article by Leah Travels, I found an app that solves this problem.

The ProHDR app takes two photos, one light and one dark, and combines the two to make a better high definition picture. I have been in love with it ever since. The only problem with it is it is not too cold friendly. When you tap the screen it takes a minute to analyze the scene and then snap two pictures, and then combine them. This process takes less than a minute, but when you take your gloves off in zero degrees with sub zero wind chills, it seems like it takes forever.

Despite the slight added time, the ProHDR is worth it, and I think that you can see with these photos, does a pretty good job.

I’m going to check out this app. My photos could use some help. I seriously want to cross-country ski. The only skis I’ve ever been on are on the water, but I’d like to try this. How would you say it compares to running? I’ve run for years and have the endurance, I’m just not sure how my strength would be to handle a long distance on skis.

If you can run you can ski. Running is much more intense than skiing. It does take awhile to build up skiing muscles, but endurance is half the game and you are already adept at that, so you would be good at skiing.
I find my camera phone very frustrating for pictures because usually I can’t even tell what I’m taking a picture of. This app looks amazing – but it’s one of those things where you need to take the time to play with it, time being the problem.
Love your photos and definitely an improvement over what one gets without the app.

Actually this app is easier taking photos than the regular camera function on the iPhone. All you do is open the app, wait for it to load, point toward your desired shot, touch the screen, hold until it takes two photos, wait a couple of minutes for it to combine the two photos, then save. You can also edit the photo once you take it right from the app. Sure, you can get better shots if you take the time to play, but just the regular function is simple.
I have to say I have missed your ski photos this winter!
