This is actually the anti-travel of the day photo as February 2, 2011 was a day no one traveled in and around Chicago. Flights were cancelled and Lake Shore Drive infamously shut down with many people still stuck in their cars. The only way to get around town was by cross-country skiing. My kind of day.

You whippersnappers don’t know what snow is. I was Chicago during the Great Snow of ’67 when the Lake froze over and wolves came across the ice from Michigan and carried off small children. City government ground to a halt as aldermen couldn’t get out of their bars and all across the city wards went unhealed. Lawyers stayed home with their hands in their own pockets. Lake Shore Drive was littered with abandoned vehicles and looked like a scene from the Eastern Front.
But what a wonderful day for cross-country skiing.

That sounds like a crazy scene DEK. That year pre-dates me by three years, so I am glad I could live vicariously through your memory of the storm.
How could people travel if the snow’s that thick? Were you really able to travel using skis?
That’s so cool of you! I would love to do skiing someday!

On many of the cross streets a few people with 4W drives had driven on the streets that had not been plowed. The weight of the cars packed down the snow in the middle of their treads creating a perfect cross-country ski path. I was rolling up and down the streets and was like a rock star. People were taking pictures of me and wanting to get their pictures taken with me. It was a blast.
Alas, Andrew, I have never been cool. I stayed indoors, warm and snug in our high-rise, and saw people on skis on the television. The thought that I might do anything like that myself never entered my mind.

Well, this happened on the day before I turned 24. Coming from a place where it never snows I can just imagine what you guys have to go through but its great you tend to look at the brighter side and turn a bad situation into an opportunity to be more resourceful. But I certainly hope the dreadful events in ’67 does not happen again.

Thick Snow around the city, but you don’t mind this, still you do something to make your day amazingly complete. Skiing is the means of travel that’s great. Continue inspiring other to travel.
