There are few guarantees in life, but one is that you will see a buffalo along the Custer State Park wildlife loop road in South Dakota. My first tatanka was this group walking through the forest up on a hill. This beast turned to look, and I could see his breath in the cold air. A shiver went through my spine as I felt like one of the early pioneers like Lewis and Clark peering at these animals for the first time. Then I took out a shotgun and shot them all for their hides only. Couldn’t they have at least made wings?

I have to admit I’ve never seen a buffalo. The ones I have seen in Buffalo and Colorado aren’t very good right now.

Yea, it is kind of sad as they were an interesting team there for awhile. I will never forget that butt whooping they laid on I think Nebraska when Nebraska was number 1.
I declare that picture is awesome! I expect one with a close-up of the tatanka! It would seriously make an awesome jigsaw puzzle, for real. Stay warm and don’t be affraid of the tananka, they can’t be any more harmful than my goats, I wouldn’t think!

They can actually be very ornery. Need to keep your distance, just like any large wild animal.
Did you hang the hides on the wall? Make a rug?…Seriously, these are awesome creatures…ever been to Yellowstone?
Cheers..

Never been to Yellowstone. One of these days!
That is breath-taking. I really like your blog. I found it when searching for the Everglades – getting ready to do my first adventure in the 10,000 islands!

Thanks Max,
You will have a spectacular trip. Let me know if you post any pictures on flickr or somewhere as I would love to check them out.
Aren’t they wonderful! We saw them in Yellowstone when we visited there. They actually raise them at the NM Penitentiary south of Santa Fe. You can see them from the road.

Yeah, I was expecting a photo of you up close with one of the critters. The ones in Northern California (Hwy 20 from 101 to Lakeport) are on a farm with several. Imagine how good you’d look next to one of them!;)
However, you’re doing pretty well. I showed your photo with the travel bloggers to a glamorous lady friend, and she swooned over your blue yes. “Yikes, he’s a cutie!” she exclaimed. Gotta ditch those sunglasses build your platform with eager fans. (Jusssst kidding!)

Jay,
Thanks for sharing my blog with your friends. I hope I gained a new fan. I have some closer up pics of buffaloes, but I like this one as it was my first and the surrounding is pretty cool.
