While eating breakfast today at my favorite Chicago diner, the West River Café, I was asked by the proprietor if I had ever been to beautiful Prague. I was wearing a shirt from there I had purchased on my trip in 2003.
When I replied “yes,” she told me she had heard it was beautiful. She received correct information as the capital city of the Czech Republic is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited.
I prefer the outdoors, but some cities have a charm and beauty to them which make the urban setting more than palpable. My hometown city of Chicago is one city I feel is pretty enough to bear the masses, but it is not in the same league as Prague.
Prague, like Paris, was fortunate enough to be one of the few major cities in Europe to escape being turned into rubble in World War II. It never saw combat and was never felt to be strategic to the Nazis, so it also escaped becoming a target for Allied air bombs.
Thanks to the reprieve from destruction, the city has an old city charm to it. The highlights of the city include the Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge along the Vltava River. The Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarters, and the Wenceslas Square are other gorgeous spots in this enchanting city.
Stay tuned,

Ted, thank you so much for this, I have always wanted to visit Prague. I am so glad it was spared the devastation of WWII and hopefully I will get to see it before WWIII. Very nice pics to tide me over.
Ted,
Prague is definitely a beautiful city! Some complain about the place being overrun by tourists and “cheap” shtick, but a step around the corner into one of the many quiet parts (on either side of the Vltava River) shows clearly why the city still holds its unique charm.
But as I also learned recently, Prague wasn’t exactly spared from a bombing raid, as bombs rained down on the city in mid-February 1945 : http://www.radio.cz/en/section/talking/the-bombing-of-prague-was-it-a-mistake
Thanks again for your post!

I’d love to visit Europe someday and Prague would surely be one of the places to visit. I love all the history in the scenery.

I’ve yet to visit anywhere in Europe but if I had a shortlist of cities I’d want to initially tackle, Prague would be near the top.

Sure is a wonderful city to take time to explore. I loved the street life- all the buskers, and groups that entertain on the streets or on Charles Bridge. It may be too touristy in the peak of the season, but a visit on shoulder is great. And there a terrific amount of day tripping one can do to get away from the hordes.
Loved it.

Cool post on Prague! It’s definitely touristy, but so is anywhere in western Europe! What I love about Prague is it’s the picture of Europe many Americans have in their heads – the cobblestone, the winding alleys, the amazing architecture. ps I’m from Chicago, too!
