The series Game of Thrones is one of the most popular series on television right now and it is based on the George R .R. Martin series “A Song of Ice and Fire.  ”   The continuing saga of the Lannister’s, Stark’s, and the various other families, has been keeping viewers on the edge of their seats for six seasons now.  The show is filmed in various beautiful landscapes throughout the world and these places have now become popular tourist destinations.   This summer visit the places that you have become enthralled with on your television screen.

Game of Thrones Morocco

Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate, Morocco is a day trip from Marrakech and Atlas Studios is the world’s largest film studios.     It is also the film site of internationally acclaimed films like Babel and Gladiator.  Many of the sets are still intact and you can tour them.  This is the site of Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo’s wedding, as well as the city of Yunkai and it is a beautiful desert setting worthy of any visit to Morocco.

Iceland

Iceland is home to three National parks:  Vatnajökull, Þingvellir, and  Snæfellsjökull, and it is one of the main sights for the filming of “The North” on Game of Thrones.    Keep your eyes peeled for “White Walkers” as you wander through this beautiful setting.  The parks are stunning and there are many activities for visitors to the area like caving, cycling, horseback riding, trekking, kayaking, and whale watching.  There are also geothermal pools where you can relax in the soothing naturally heated water.  Be sure to catch the Northern Lights at night.

Dubrovnik Old City

 Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, Croatia is considered the jewel of the Adriatic and this beautiful fortified city is a treat for all who visit it.  The historic Old Town is also the site for the filming of King’s Landing and you can wander through the streets that the Lannister’s fought so hard to defend.  After you have finished searching for things that you recognize from your favourite scenes be sure to try some freshly caught seafood and some locally made wine.

Titanic Studios

Titanic Studios is in Belfast, Northern Ireland and it is where a lot of Game of Thrones scenes are shot.  The area has embraced the success of the show and there are several tours for you to take advantage of that include transportation and accommodation.  So book a tour and see the sights including Winterfell, one of Robb Stark’s camps and many others.

Girona

Girona, Catalonia, Spain is a medieval city that is featured prominently in Season Six of Game of Thrones.  Be sure to visit the stunning Girona Cathedral, the Jewish Quarter, and the Arab baths, to see sights you will recognize from the series including the site for Braavos.   It is about an hour north of Barcelona so you can rent a car in the city and reach filming area easily.  Before leaving Barcelona make sure to tour this beautiful city with the stunning architecture of Antoni Gaudi, the art of Picasso, and one of the best beaches in Europe.
