Traveling Ted is a blog that takes readers along on my adventures hiking, canoeing, skiing, and international backpacking. Many blogs focus on one aspect of backpacking, but I tackle both the outdoor adventure side and international exploration as well.

Whenever I see lists showing the best places in the world to view fall foliage, I always let out a big pshaw or a dissatisfied guffaw every time any list does not include Michigan and particularly the Upper Peninsula. I have hiked several times in the Porcupine Mountains during Columbus Day and the experience always inspires awe. I found Pictured Rocks fall foliage to be just as impressive.

Michigan and UP is where it is at for fall foliage

I decided this autumn to opt for a different adventure as tempting as it is to return to my old haunts. This year I selected Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This location is a little closer to Chicago as it is straight north of Green Bay.

It was a good choice as the colors were just as spectacular as the Porcupine Mountains. The featured scenery in Pictured Rocks is the cliffs along Lake Superior and the fall colors blazed orange and red above these cliffs. The park is more than just the cliffs though and further inland there are lakes, streams, and impressive forests.

I hiked the entire length of the North Country National Scenic Trail through the park, which is approximately 42 miles. It was definitely one of the highlights of the year and this photo essay highlights the amazing fall colors I encountered.
