Sometimes you do not have to put on a backpack and travel across the world to see something cool. In the winter in Illinois at Starved Rock State Park there are a series of canyons which produce frozen waterfalls when conditions are ripe. When the waterfalls crash over the canyons and then it gets cold, the waterfalls freeze producing awesome ice formations spilling over the canyon. The park actually has a hotline for waterfall and icicle conditions: 815-667-4726.

Heh – I think you might have just cemented my winter hiking getaway plans. I’ve been vacillating between Kentucky and Arkansas – if I go to Kentucky I’ll hit Starved Rock en route just in time for my after lunch hike. 🙂
Your readers might appreciate visiting Matthieson State Park just down the road, which has some amazing waterfalls and rock features as well. I’ve got a recommended hike there somewhat overly documented at http://ramblefeet.com.
Thanks for the post!
Ramblefeet,
I have been to Mattheissen and enjoyed it tremendously, although I have never been there in the winter. Enjoy your winter hiking trip. For me it is all about skiing until the spring.
