Unsurprisingly, Italy is a popular holiday destination, with tourists worldwide attracted by the country’s natural beauty, culture, history and cuisine. It’s a country with so much to offer that it’s impossible to see everything in one trip – so it’s a good idea to decide in advance where you want to visit and what you want to see.
Rome
For art lovers and history buffs, there’s one place that is a must: Rome. The centre of a once great empire and the inspiration for countless works of art, Rome is ideal for a first-time visitor to Italy. Exploring the museums and art galleries, or even just wandering around the Piazza Navona, the air of culture is clearly present everywhere.
Bologna
While the cuisine on offer in Rome is superb, for those looking for a true Italian feast, Bologna is the place to be. Birthplace of the bolognese sauce, the city is home to a range of superb restaurants and shops selling fine produce. Piazza Maggiore is the perfect spot for a coffee and a snack in one of its many cafes and bars, while the markets that lead off the square are the ideal place to pick up some of the excellent local delicacies.
Milan
Those looking for a quick weekend break filled with nothing but shopping should head for Milan, Italy’s fashion capital. The list of designers who have called it home – Giorgio Armani, Versace, Miuccia Prada, Dolce & Gabbana – reads like a who’s who list of the greatest talent the fashion world has to offer, and so naturally the shopping here is second to none. Unlike the fashion districts of cities such as Paris or London, Milan’s offerings are handily concentrated in a square known as the Quadrilatero d’Oro (the rectangle of gold), so there’s no long trek from boutique to boutique.
Venice
This wonderful canal city is a great place for a romantic getaway. Famed for its spectacular Renaissance architecture, it’s a particularly rewarding place to visit for those with an interest in history and design. The entire city is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in fact, and it’s certainly one of the most beautiful and memorable places in Italy.
