The most iconic tourist feature by far in Guyana is the amazing Kaieteur Falls located in the vast interior along the Potaro River. Therefore, it is only natural that my first full length post should be dedicated to the country’s number one attraction.
I will be writing a more descriptive post about my experience in the weeks to come with tips and information, but this one is a photo and video essay for your viewing pleasure. I think you can see why the World Waterfall Database has Kaieteur listed number two, one ahead of Africa’s Victoria Falls, in the world behind only Iguazu Falls on the Argentinean and Brazilian border.
After seeing Kaieteur, I am motivated to see Iguazu as it is hard to imagine a more awesome sight featuring water and gravity. Guyana is currently at the peak of their dry season, so the falls are even more impressive during the rainy season. Kaieteur is five times higher than Niagara Falls on the U.S. Canadian border for those who need a little perspective on the awesomeness of this natural wonder.
Stay tuned,

Kaieteur is an easy model to work with Charles.
What an incredible site, and you captured it so well. Although, I’m unsure my vertigo would allow me to step so close to the edge:)

I am not a big fan of heights either Deej, but the wind was very moderate, so I felt pretty comfortable being near the edge.
I am with D.J., I have ordered you asfety harness for xmas, Ted. I just can not tell you how much I love these pictures and looking forward to more details regarding Kaieteur Falls. Thanks!

Thank you Robb,
I stayed a comfortable distance from the edge. I am not stuntman. Although I do adventurous stuff, I keep it fairly safe.
Spectacular views! I love how you showed us almost every angle of this waterfall. The first think I noticed was the color of the water. Very interesting.

The rivers in Guyana are all pretty muddy. They get lots of rain.
Awesome photos! I love waterfalls. My favorite photo is the one with the rainbow. This is definitely a place I would love to explore.

Thanks Jeremy,
This is a place I long to return to. Two hours is a ridiculous little time to explore. The surrounding area has jaguars, giant river otters, and all sorts of crazy wildlife.
T-Bear, these may be the best pictures I have seen yet on any of your post! Look forward to the rest of the articles. However, I must ask why were there no shots of you diving from the top of the cliff? You are Edward “Ted” “T-Bear” “Traveling Ted” Nelson, daredevil of all daredevils. I’ll assume that’s coming in a later post.
Legend,
I will do that when my Magical Flying Unicorn career is over. I don’t want to leave the team short of a shortstop and coach 🙂
WOW!!! The picture with the rainbow reminds me of Vic Falls. I had no idea this waterfall even existed, but now I NEED to see it! Thanks for the inspiration, Ted!

Before I started studying Guyana, I was clueless about the falls too. Hard to believe that all anyone knows about waterfalls in South America is Iguazu and Angel. Those two falls are very deserving of attention, but Kaieteur is awesome too.
I’m a sucker for waterfall pictures. These are beautiful. Keep the Guyana pictures coming!

I learned quite a bit about this country while there. Unfortunately, some of this knowledge came the hard way, but that is how we learn.
Amazing rainbow shot. I tried to get a similar shot at a waterfall near Hilo last weekend and had no luck. Great job.

Thanks,
It helped that there was a lot of spray since this waterfall is so powerful and also it was a bright sunny day.
Ted, I had NO idea the waterfalls existed! I’d heard about the very famous Salto del Angel in neighboting Venezuela, the tallest ones in the world and now wonder how these 2 compare.

I only saw Niagara so far but these pictures are really amazing. I hope to be able to see it one day too 🙂
You cannot go wrong with a waterfall, even a small waterfall is soothing and interesting to check out. A waterfall of this magnitude though is awesome. I hope you get a chance to see it too someday.
Beautiful shots! They made me feel like I was actually there. This place is definitely on my list of places to travel too. I love waterfalls, especially ones that you have to hike to get to.

Not only do you have to hike to get to this one, you have to fly hours from Georgetown since it is in the middle of the jungle.
