I grabbed a copy of the Stabroek New in Georgetown, Guyana and a major concern revolves around the trash in the city. An editorial and a letter to the editor both voiced concern about the issue.
After two days of walking around the city, I could see why. Georgetown is one of the dirtiest cities I have ever been in as far as trash being a problem. This is a strange contrast because the country is a leader in eco-tourism, but it does not take long to realize the interior and the capital are two different animals.
It appears the capital is trying to clean itself up. The fact that people are expressing concern in the paper is also a positive sign. There are signs exhorting the populace to “pick it up.” I remember growing up there was the “don’t be a litterbug” and Texas had “don’t mess with Texas,” so having an add campaign is a start. As you can see from the photo below it has not quite exactly taken hold, but some Guyanese are actually getting close.
Stay tuned,

Guyana should have its version of Zero Tolerance. Good luck to Guyana.

They have an ad campaign and that is a start, but a lot of work to be done. First they need to clean up, then they need to change the mindset.
Although I got a chuckle from, “At least some were close,” I do hope you picked up that mess. I would have had to, just saying. I go all OCD on litter and weeds!

Robb,
I did not pick up the mess sorry to say. If I would have concerned myself with picking up every mess in Guyana, I would have never come home.
That’s both sad and funny. I can understand cities being dirty but no excuse for green areas like this when there is a trash can right there.

Exactly Jeremy,
It does not take a lot of effort to make sure the trash goes in the receptacle.
