Traveling Ted is a blog that takes readers along on my adventures hiking, canoeing, skiing, and international backpacking. Many blogs focus on one aspect of backpacking, but I tackle both the outdoor adventure side and international exploration as well.

Wet and cold weather can turn an otherwise perfect hunting trip into a miserable experience. Whether you’re posted up in a blind before sunrise or trekking through marshland in steady rain, staying dry is essential—not just for comfort, but for safety and performance. Prolonged exposure to moisture and low temperatures can cause fatigue, reduce focus, and even increase the risk of hypothermia. With the right approach and proper gear, you can stay warm, dry, and fully prepared for the hunt.

Key to staying dry

The key to staying dry begins with a proper layering system. Avoid cotton clothing, as it absorbs water and takes a long time to dry. Instead, choose a moisture-wicking base layer made of merino wool or synthetic fabric. This layer pulls sweat away from your skin and helps regulate body temperature. Over that, wear an insulating mid-layer such as fleece or lightweight down to trap body heat. Finally, add a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against rain, snow, and strong winds.

High-quality outerwear makes a significant difference in harsh conditions. Standard rain jackets may not provide enough protection in heavy rain or wetland environments. Durable materials with waterproof membranes and sealed seams are much more reliable. Investing in waterproof duck hunting gear ensures that you stay protected even during sudden weather changes. Jackets, bibs, and waders specifically designed for hunting not only keep moisture out but also provide camouflage and durability for rugged outdoor use.

Keep your extremities warm

Your hands, feet, and head are especially vulnerable in wet and cold weather. Waterproof insulated gloves help maintain warmth while still allowing you to handle equipment effectively. For your feet, insulated waterproof boots or breathable waders paired with moisture-wicking thermal socks will keep them warm and dry. Make sure your boots are not too tight, as proper circulation is necessary to maintain warmth. Wearing a waterproof hat or insulated beanie also helps retain body heat, while a neck gaiter can block cold wind from entering your jacket.

Keep an eye out for wet weather conditions and be prepared

In addition to clothing, your hunting setup should also be prepared for wet conditions. Use waterproof seat cushions, ground tarps, and protective covers for your gear. Carry extra dry clothing in a waterproof bag in case you need to change. Always check the weather forecast before heading out so you can plan accordingly and avoid being caught unprepared.

Wet and cold days are often the most productive for waterfowl hunting. By dressing properly, investing in quality gear, and preparing your equipment carefully, you can remain comfortable and focused. Staying dry not only improves your hunting experience but also ensures your safety in challenging outdoor conditions.
