For those who have followed this site for awhile, they might have figured out that the Wisconsin River is one of my favorite places in the world. I have been canoeing the Wisconsin River since I was 10 years old. This makes over 30 years that I have canoed this fantastic river.
I have probably averaged about 1.5 trips a year over the 30 plus years I have camped and canoed the mighty Wisconsin. Probably 90 percent or more of those trips were amazing. The only variables that make a trip on the Wisconsin not so much fun is the weather or the water level. Even those trips were memorable in some way.
Labor Day will mark my second trip of the year on the Wisconsin, so I made my quota for the year. This trip will be exciting because once I take out at Woodman, the trip is only beginning. I will be heading up the Kickapoo River for two days on this river, and I will end up at Wauzeka where it empties into the Wisconsin.
For those wanting to know about the Wisconsin, read about how I believe it is the best river camping in the world here. Wisconsin River Outings can get you started with a canoe, a guide if needed, and a ride. They are located in Boscobel and Sauk City.

My home state! I’ve still never canoed that river, but I hope I get to one of these days!

Years ago I was lucky enough to get a Red Feather slot at a Camp Sidney Cohen on Lake Nabbon (?) for 2 weeks. My family wasn’t rich and the full cost couldn’t be afforded. During the 2 weeks we took a 5 day canoe trip down the Baraboo to the Wisconsin river. I learned to paddle a canoe OJT.
The dam had just been completed. I think we was Frank Loydd Wright’s home up on the bluff. After portaging the Dam we continued down the river for another day or 2. I remember that trip in great detail (at least most of it) but I don’t quite remember the year it was. Our food bundles had been mixed up with another trip and we were very short of food. We fished and swam most of the way.
I doubt that many kids would be allowed to take such a trip these days. But it was great fun.
Your site brought back memories of the trip.
Thanks for that.
That sounds like a great adventure Jim. I am glad this post evoked such pleasant memories. Fishing and swimming down the Wisconsin River is a great trip for people of any age.
