The story behind the name Traveling Ted TV

A lot of people ask me where I got the name Traveling Ted TV. The Traveling Ted part is pretty much a given, but the TV part and my web URL of .tv is what many ask about. Since many have asked, there are probably others out there wondering.

Even though the Traveling Ted part is obvious, I am going to tell the story here anyway. It is really not that interesting, but at least it is short.

I went to school at the University of Tennessee, although I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. After school, I eventually settled in Chicago. Going to the University of Tennessee, I obviously became a fanatic College Football and a Tennessee Volunteer Football.

Every weekend in the fall, if I am not hiking, I can be found at a local watering hole watching the Tennessee football game. I always wear this old school University of Tennessee sweater that just said “Tennessee” on the front.

I was soon given the name of Tennessee Ted from a group of like minded football fans that I began to hang out with. When I branched out into Travel blogging, the name Traveling Ted was the natural choice.

I started off writing with Examiner, but soon branched out with my own blog. Unfortunately, the URL www.travelingted.com was taken; although, the website is not in use. It is being hijacked by someone waiting for me to become famous.

At about the same time that I began Traveling Ted TV, I read a brilliant book called Surviving Paradise by Peter Rudiak-Gould. It is an hilarious account of an English teacher in the Marshall Islands. In the book, he talks about the .tv fad, which was the domain name for the Pacific Island of Tuvalu. I liked the triple T alliteration, so I choose Traveling Ted TV. If I ever break into travel videos, the URL will make even more sense.

Traveling Ted someday hopes to have Traveling Ted dot com

However, I have had my eye on Traveling Ted.com. It has been a hope of mine to secure the name. I keep waiting for each July to roll around and hope the URL squatter will give it up and let it expire. This has not happened.

I have thought about sending them an email and asking what they wanted for it, but today, I got an email from someone asking if I was interested in buying it. I replied that I was, but I have yet to hear back regarding their asking price.

I am afraid with all the awesome comments I get on the blog, they will think I am a rock star, even though I have fallen out of Nomadic Samuel’s top 100. Maybe I should send them that post to let them know I am just a poor travel blogger who has fallen on hard times lately.

Stay tuned,

TT

Perhaps you should just send the URL squatter one of your many adoring female fans as a good-will offering. It’s not like you don’t have hundreds of them waiting in the wing to be your beck-and-call-girl. ;-)

PS. Thanks for the awesome link. I just reworked the pics on that Tennessee post last night.

I actually heard the story of Tuvalu during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics. I believe they sold the .tv rights to someone in Los Angeles for $50,000/ Because of that, you could now purchase that domain!

Great story- I can empathize. The reason our travel business is The Santa Fe Traveler is someone owns, but doesn’t use the plain SFT one- we were luckier with Santa Fe Travelers- TG! But, you my friend, may never get that .com now. You’ve publicly said you want it- that ads $$$ to the price. Traveling Ted TV is a fine name and the one you’re probably going to have for a long time-lol.

I thought about that before posting, but I I don’t care. I have an amount I am willing to pay and will not go past it. Traveling Ted.TV has served me well. You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just might find, to get what you need.

I always wondered – and now I know. Good luck getting the domain you want. I doubt that many want so bargain hard!

[...] I went to school at the University of Tennessee. I now live in Chicago. I’m found on many Saturdays visiting the local watering holes watching my beloved Volunteers and other big college football match ups. I often wear this old school Tennessee sweater that just said “Tennessee” on the front. The group I hung out with began to call me “Tennessee Ted.” When I started a travel blog the name “Traveling Ted,” was a no brainer. (Editor’s note: the entire story is on Traveling Ted TV.) [...]
