On a recent trip to Mexico I was in a van with a bunch of other bloggers watching the Mexican countryside roll by. We saw someone out in the field with an interesting donkey adorned in colorful blankets. It may have even had a sombrero on. One of the women excitedly pointed and said “hey, look at that cool donkey.”
Some ooos and ahhs followed as we flew past. “Nice ass,” I yelled from the back. Another male traveler grimaced in pain at my expression because he was just about to say the same thing and was irked I was quicker on the draw with my stupid sexual innuendo.
One of the women that were ooing and ahhing made a disparaging statement about the difference between men and women, and she is right too. Driving in foreign lands the women were in tune to the cultural meaning and the experience of seeing the interesting donkey while the dudes were trying to battle over who could be the quickest to say the silly infantile sexual expression and then laugh over it.
When I saw this infographic on the difference between men and women and especially in their differences in travel habits, the little anecdote from Mexico immediately came to mind. The differences between men and women in daily pursuits is interesting enough, and travel is more interesting than regular life, so the differences between men and women while on vacation is fascinating. Even the mundane difference in how the different sexes view a donkey sighting in Mexico is thought provoking.
The video is stereotypical and will not be true for everyone, but there is a reason for stereotypes. I am definitely a testament to some of the facts in the clip. The clip begins by stating that women spend four days more than men on average researching holidays. I am not sure I have spent four days in my life preparing for a holiday.
On my latest trip to Mexico, I awoke five hours before my flight and started packing. I guess I am later than most because according to the video, fifty percent of men wait until the night before. I wonder what percentage waits until the morning of?
The rest of the film points out other general travel differences between men and women like women packing too much and taking too long. Another stat proves men are more susceptible to go without travel insurance and pay for it as men are also more inclined to do risky activity and get injured.
The video does not show what percentage of men in the back of a van will shout out crass jokes about asses and donkeys. Perhaps that will come in the sequel.
Stay tuned,

I think I am like women in some ways and like men in others. I do wait until the last minute to pack but I do research and am a little more risk averse than most men. What does that make me?

Smart.
I agree Jay. There is a song by the Grateful Dead that goes “that’s right, the women are smarter, women are smarter then men today,” or something like that. Jeremy is brilliant to take the best attributes of each sex.
