Think about it – over 1,000 miles across Europe with three of your best buddies, raising money for charity and having the time of your life. Sounds great, right? So what’s stopping you? Nothing – go on, go out and buy yourself a £300 hunk-of-junk that is unlikely to make it to the end of your road, let alone to Prague, sign up to one of the many rallies trundling across Europe this summer and go!
If that wasn’t enough to stir the wanderlust from the soles of your feet, here are five great reasons to take seven days out of your limited holiday time, and hit the road.
The hard work is done for you
Sometimes the thought of planning a road trip is daunting – you need to plan your route, your accommodation, breakdown cover and all the other grizzly bits of traveling you can’t be bothered to deal with. With a banger rally, the route is already decided, campsites or hotels are already booked and paid for and challenges to make the trip even more fun are handed to you every morning before you set off.
Raise money for charity
This is probably the only opportunity out there where you can go on holiday, drink your weight in cheap European beer (did someone say Jupiler…?) and have bucket loads of fun all in the name of charity. Most rallies give you the option to raise cash for your charity of choice, so you can raise awareness of local issues on the continent.
Find yourself
It’s highly doubtful that, if you’re entering a banger rally, you’re a new-world hippie on the road to self discovery – but driving across the continent in a falling-apart-Ford, with a 10 year-old map and four hungover passengers is only fun for a certain breed of person. This is your chance to get away from the office and really let your hair down. You’ll get to spend some quality time with some good friends as well as make new ones, and also have the chance to try things you never thought you would.
Something different
It might be the case that your better-half drags you to an all-inclusive resort every year to do nothing but lie by the pool and sip on Long Island Ice Teas for two weeks. This sounds like paradise on paper, but the reality usually amounts to boredom after the first 60 minutes of bronzing – so here’s your chance to change it up a bit. Banger rallies let you enjoy the drive, as well as the destination (usually a bar serving under-priced beer).
Sense of achievement
Not only will you have made it across Europe by banger, fixed the car at a pot-holed roadside and somehow managed to blag yourself a free night in a hotel when you broke down in the middle of Romania with no hope of catching up with everyone until the next day, but you could win yourself a few cash prizes. Most rallies will set the teams challenges every day, and will reward the team who did it the best/worst/most ridiculously a cash prize at the end of the day. Remember, the beers are on you if you do win!
