I entered a local photography contest and entered the above picture of Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. When the entries were released I did not think I had a chance. I was up against a beautiful picture of the sunlight fading on the Grand Canyon National Park.
I figured I was done for as the Grand Canyon is hard to beat. Everyone around the world has heard of this iconic National Park in Arizona. Quetico Provincial Park, on the other hand, is only known by a devoted few.
You say Quetico Provincial Park to a group of travelers and they will get a blank stare even from Canadians. Unless you are a reader of this blog, or a diehard canoeist, the name Quetico does not register with most. The park is overshadowed by more popular by the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and by more notorious national parks in Canada like Banff and Jasper.
I voted for myself online, but I did nothing else to promote the contest via email. I figured I did not have a chance. Then, to my pleasure, I found out I had won, or to be more precise, Quetico had won. The prize was small, but it was vindication of how gorgeous Quetico Provincial Park is even if not many know about it.
If you can make the effort of getting to the middle of Quetico, you will be rewarded with views seen on this page. It is a magical place and because of its relatively obscure status in the outdoors and travel world, there is hardly anyone there. It is not easy to travel through this beautiful land. There are no motorboats allowed, so canoeists, moose, bear, bald eagles, wolves, and loons rule hear.

Congratulations! The lesser known Quetico Provincial Park may be more intriguing to some than the iconic Grand Canyon. Plus your photography draws one into the story and scene. Your images remind me of paddling the Boundary Waters.

Thanks Gaelyn,
I am glad my photography brings back good memories.
I love that Quetico won, love that shot too. Quetico is among the top 3 Ontario Parks I still want to visit, it looks like pure paradise. As much as I enjoyed the Grand Canyon too, I think the competition made the right choice!

Quetico is a wonderful place. I have been just under ten times. It is one of those bucket list killers of mine. I keep going back there instead of checking new places out.
