Malaga, a city in Andalusia, Spain, was the birthplace of famous painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso. Picasso was born on October 25th, 1881. Flights to Malaga are available from many cities so it is easy to jump on board a plane and find inspiration in a place where this well-known figure lived.

More than 500,000 people live in the city, making it the sixth largest in the country. The subtropical Mediterranean climate of Malaga means the city’s winters are warmer than Europe’s average and the summers are long. The city was founded as Malaka around 770 BC, making it one of the oldest in the world. Its intense history makes Malaga a significant cultural centre for Europe.

Though it is the hometown of Pablo Picasso, other talented faces have followed in his footsteps to gain prominence including actor Antonio Banderas, poet Maria Victoria Atencia, athlete Miguel Angel Jimenez and singer Antonio Molina. Picasso had expressed a desire to display his work in his city of birth. Though the original plans for a museum honouring his work came to light in the 1950s, it did not come to fruition for many years. The museum dedicated to Pablo Picasso, called Museo Picasso Malaga, opened in 2003. Located in Buenavista Palace, family members have donated nearly 300 works of art and Malaga is a city full of art, much of it inspired by Picasso’s legacy.

Tourism is a major part of Malaga’s economy and culture. There is much to see, aside from the museum dedicated to Picasso. The city is home to beautiful historical gardens, such as La Concepcion. Tourists also flock to see the architecture of numerous churches in the area. The city hosts a variety of museums, including the Carmen Thyssen Museum.

Many also worship the sun, spending time on the beach or enjoying outdoor activities. Guests who go in February and March may be a part of Fiestas de Carnaval, which occurs during the 40 days of Lent. The festivities include dancing and street parades.
