There are many well known islands around the world popular with travelers. The Greek Isles, Crete, Malta, Tenerife, Boracay, and Madagascar to name a few which are famous for their size, the adventure travel opportunities, or for their place in history. Then there are island nations like England, Japan, and the Philippines which are well populated and well traveled.
Here are five islands either far off the travel radar or islands you have never heard of that are worth a look especially if traveling in the area.
1. Fuerteventura –
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands behind Tenerife. It is part of Spain although it is closer to Africa than it is to the Iberian Peninsula. In May of 2009 it was listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Although it is usually plays second fiddle to Tenerife in size and popularity, it does have the longest beaches in the archipelago making a holidays to Fuerteventura an enticing option for sun and swim enthusiasts.
2. Malapascua Island
The Philippines is an archipelago nation consisting of 7,000 islands. The most popular is the famous Boracay. In a hostel in Manila, a fellow traveler told me about Malapascua. He said if I wanted a beautiful beach that is quiet and practically untouched, check out this tiny island just directly off of Cebu. A tiny ferry took me across to Malapascua and as we trolled over and the flying fish jumped out of the water, I knew the tip in Manila was about to pay off.
3. Tobago
Tobago, combined with Trinidad is an island republic in the Caribbean. Together they make up the republic of Trinidad & Tobago. Trinidad is the larger and more populated of the two islands and has the republic’s capital at Port of Spain. Tobago is located just north and is from all accounts a really laid back chilled out island. I will be visiting these two islands in a week for their famous Carnival. I will have more information on this island to share upon my return.

4. Rose Island
At the farthest northern tip of the almost 15 mile long Lake Kawnippi in Quetico National Park lies the three mile long Rose Island. The highlights of this island bald eagles, fantastic camping, walleye fishing, and solitude. You might spend a week up here and see more bald eagles than humans while at Rose Island.
5. Coumbe Island
The Wisconsin River from Sauk City to the confluence of the Mississippi has some of the best river camping in the Midwest, the United States, and the world. Coumbe Island is situated at the small river town of Blue River. The reason for the great camping along the Wisconsin River is due to the fact that the river is completely sand bottom. When the water level is right, one can float down the river and camp along the exposed sand bars along the way. Coumbe Island usually has one of the best sand bars along the way.
What is your favorite unknown island?

Don’t forget Zanzibar and its sister island of Pemba! Great diving, great snorkeling and beautiful beaches as well as a lot of history! Take a spice tour, walk among giant tortoises, wander narrow streets admiring the hand caved doors. They are great islands to visit after a wildlife safari!

I have seen pictures of Zanzibar and Pemba and they look amazing. Hope to walk, swim, and even kayak along those beaches someday.
Malapascua in the Philippines is a great place. Another island nearby is Bantanyan Island, also accessible from Cebu Island via ferry.
In the Philippines, there are a lot of beautiful islands.

I don’t know that I have an unknown island. Not really being much of a beach person, I don’t go to islands, have never been on a cruise, and the appeal of the sand and sun isn’t big for me. However, I do love Kauai. It’s not unknown but it’s the garden isle, least crowded, and most beautiful in my opinion.
