Purple gallinule struts along a Florida Everglades shoreline

Purple gallinule Florida Everglades

Purple gallinule at the Anhinga Trail in the Florida Everglades

A bird I had never seen before is the beautiful purple gallinule, but this is a familiar refrain when you go to the Everglades National Park in Florida. I would walk around the corner and run into a bittern, which was another bird I had never seen before, but that photo is for another day. I found this bright beauty along a shoreline on the Anhinga Trail, which is a must stop for any birder and hiker making their way from Miami to Flamingo.

Stay tuned,

That’s good to know about the Anhinga Trail. I am planing a road trip from Ft. Myers down to Flamingo but I was waiting for the Scenic Loop to open (They were re-graveling it a few weeks ago)

You will love the Anhinga Trail. The boardwalks over the swamp make it one of the most accessible places to see wildlife that I have ever been to. I don’t know about any scenic loop. This must be new. I will look into that. The last time I have been to the Everglades was the last time New England played the Giants in the Super Bowl. Hoping to get back in the next year or two.

It runs off of old 41 right a little to the West of the Shark Valley Visitor center and runs up to Monument lake. It is also the start of the Florida National Scenic trail

It is nice to know they are opening up more areas to view the Everglades. You should also check out the Big Cypress National Preserve on your way down. They have a really awesome scenic drive as well.

That’s a cute bird. You’ve got a wonderful snap of it. I think I should visit the Everglades National Park soon.

    Thanks for sharing.
